Nutrition Before & After Liposuction
Healing is a metabolic event. What you eat in the four weeks before surgery and the six weeks after affects bruising, swelling, wound healing, and how quickly your contour becomes visible.
4 weeks before surgery
- Increase protein to 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day
- Check ferritin, vitamin D, B12 — correct deficiencies
- Add vitamin C 500 mg/day for collagen synthesis
- Stabilize weight (±2 lb per week maximum)
- Reduce ultra-processed foods and added sugar
2 weeks before surgery — stop these
- Fish oil / omega-3 supplements
- Vitamin E > 400 IU
- Garlic, ginger, ginkgo, ginseng supplements
- Turmeric supplements (culinary amounts OK)
- CBD and cannabis products
- NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin) — confirm with surgeon
- Alcohol
- Nicotine in any form (ideally 6 weeks)
First 72 hours after surgery
- Small, frequent, easily digestible meals
- Broth-based soups, yogurt, eggs, smoothies
- Prunes or magnesium citrate to counter narcotic constipation
- Water, electrolyte drinks — avoid caffeine excess
- Skip carbonation for the first 48 hours
Weeks 1–6
- Protein target: 1.2–1.5 g/kg/day
- 5+ servings of vegetables and fruit daily (vitamin C, potassium)
- Iron-rich foods if bruising was significant
- Sodium <2000 mg/day to reduce swelling
- Zinc-rich foods (pumpkin seeds, oysters, beef) for wound healing
A simple recovery day (example)
Breakfast: Greek yogurt with berries and 1 scoop protein powder (35 g protein). Snack: hard-boiled eggs + apple. Lunch: grilled chicken salad with olive oil, avocado, and quinoa (40 g protein). Snack: cottage cheese + pineapple. Dinner: salmon, sweet potato, sautéed greens (35 g protein). Water: 2.5 L across the day.
Frequently asked questions
- How much protein do I need after liposuction?
- 1.0–1.5 g/kg of body weight per day for the first 6 weeks to support healing. A 68 kg (150 lb) patient needs 70–100 g protein daily — roughly 25–30 g at each meal plus a snack.
- Which supplements should I stop before surgery?
- Stop fish oil, vitamin E, garlic, ginseng, ginkgo, turmeric, and CBD for 2 weeks before surgery — all can increase bleeding. Confirm every prescription and supplement with your surgeon.
- Which supplements are helpful after surgery?
- A basic multivitamin, vitamin C (500–1000 mg), zinc (15–30 mg), and — if deficient — iron and vitamin D. Arnica montana may reduce bruising; bromelain may help swelling. Confirm with your surgeon.
- Can I drink alcohol during recovery?
- No alcohol for 2 weeks before surgery and at least 2 weeks after. Alcohol thins blood, worsens swelling, and interacts with pain medication.
- Does salt affect swelling?
- Yes. Aim for <2000 mg sodium/day for the first 3 weeks. Processed foods, restaurant meals, and soy sauce are the main sources — cook simply at home when you can.
- How much water should I drink?
- 2.5–3 liters per day unless medically restricted. Under-hydration worsens swelling and slows healing.
- Can I follow keto or intermittent fasting during recovery?
- Not for the first 6 weeks. Healing requires consistent carbohydrate and protein intake. Restrictive diets can also mask fluid shifts that your surgeon is monitoring.
- When can I return to my regular diet?
- Around week 6, once swelling has plateaued and you are back to normal activity. Continue emphasizing protein until final results (3–6 months).
