Tumescent Liposuction in Miami, FL
Tumescent liposuction is not a distinct procedure — it is the anesthesia foundation that made modern liposuction possible. Every technique on this site (VASER, PAL, HD, BodyTite, Renuvion) is tumescent. This page explains what the tumescent solution is, its safety limits, and when it is used as the only anesthetic (awake liposuction) versus paired with sedation.
| Also called | Tumescent local anesthesia (TLA) |
|---|---|
| Solution | Dilute lidocaine + epinephrine in saline |
| Safe lidocaine limit | ≤55 mg/kg (Klein formula) |
| Anesthesia use | Alone (awake) or with IV sedation / general |
| Typical Miami cost | $3,000 – $6,500 per area (awake) |
Why tumescent changed liposuction
Before tumescent technique (Klein, 1987), liposuction was performed under general anesthesia with significant blood loss. Tumescent infiltration reduced blood loss to under 1% of aspirate, enabled outpatient care, and made large-volume liposuction safe. The technique is now standard globally.
Awake vs. sedated tumescent
- Awake — local only; best for 1–2 small areas (submental, arms, saddlebags).
- IV sedation + tumescent — larger cases; patient rests comfortably.
- General + tumescent — Lipo 360, HD, and combined cases.
Anesthesia
Tumescent is itself an anesthesia technique. See Awake Liposuction for the local-only variant, and Lipo 360 or HD for cases that pair tumescent with general anesthesia.
Recovery timeline
- Day 0Continued anesthetic effect for up to 12 hours.
- Day 1–3Drainage of tumescent fluid from access sites is expected.
- Week 1Standard liposuction recovery follows.

Questions to ask your surgeon
- What is the total lidocaine dose planned for my case?
- Will my case be awake tumescent or sedated?
- How do you monitor for lidocaine toxicity?
Frequently asked questions
- Is tumescent liposuction a separate procedure?
- No. 'Tumescent' describes the dilute anesthetic solution — lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline — infiltrated into fat before suction. Virtually every modern liposuction (VASER, PAL, HD, BodyTite) is tumescent. Only the device that follows differs.
- Why is tumescent solution used?
- It anesthetizes the area, constricts blood vessels to minimize bleeding, and expands the fat compartment so cannulas glide more precisely. It transformed liposuction from a high-bleeding operation into an outpatient procedure.
- What is the safe lidocaine dose?
- The Klein formula allows up to 55 mg/kg of dilute lidocaine in the tumescent field, well beyond standard IV limits, because absorption is prolonged. Careful volume tracking is mandatory.
- Awake tumescent vs. sedated tumescent — what is the difference?
- Both use the same solution. Awake means local anesthesia only, suited to small volumes (≤2 areas). Sedated adds IV sedation or general for larger cases where prolonged infiltration would be uncomfortable.
- How much does tumescent liposuction cost in Miami?
- Small-area tumescent liposuction in Miami runs $3,000–$6,500 per area. Multi-area cases follow standard Miami liposuction pricing.
- Any risks specific to tumescent technique?
- Lidocaine toxicity if dose limits are exceeded; fluid overload if infiltration is not tracked; delayed absorption effects up to 12 hours postoperatively.
- Is 'wet' or 'super-wet' the same as tumescent?
- No — those are older intermediate techniques with less infiltrate. Modern tumescent uses a much larger volume of dilute solution and has largely replaced them.
